Birds need our help

Bird populations in North America are experiencing steep declines.

A recent study from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology found that nearly 1 in 4 birds has been lost over the past 50 years. Learn more

Many of the factors that contribute to birds' population declines are directly related to human activities. The two leading direct causes of bird deaths in Canada are predation by domestic cats and collisions with windows on buildings. The public has an important role to play in reducing and these threats to wild birds.

Did you know that most bird-window collisions happen at residential buildings? That's because most of the time birds fly into reflections at or below the height of surrounding trees, usually on the first or second story windows. Home window retrofits are essential for reducing the cumulative risk of window collisions to birds.

In Canada there are presently no incentives or government-backed programs for retrofitting home windows for birds. However, more homeowners and businesses than ever are heeding the call for action by voluntarily retrofitting their windows. Putting visual markers on your home windows is a great way to demonstrate your commitment to bird conservation and educate your community through example!
